hydro oil overfill

I have a 15 SCAG TT and after changing the hydro oil I was looking at the recommended fill level. The manual says to fill it to 3" below the filler neck. I did just as so but apparently over-filled it as after running it for an hour oil was coming out of the top. I shut it down and suctioned out enough oil to get it below the circular notch in the neck. I haven't ran it anymore because the lines felt very hot and the oil smelled stronger than usual. I am assuming it got too hot.
