stubborn gear on a wisconsin vh4d

I cannot for the life of me figure a way to remove the main gear on the crank that drives the oil pump,governor and timing gear.my timing gear shattered and chewed up the gear on the crank.I have a replacement gear,but cannot get the the old gear off of the crank.I do know there is a woodruff key under it.any suggestions would be appreciated,a gear puller won't fit under it.Thank you.its around a 1970 vh4d wisconsin
